SUNDAY AFTERNOON

It is half past four on a Sunday afternoon. Maggie and Jim are discussing the best ways of spending the rest of the day.

Maggie: Are you still pottering about1 in the shed,2 Jim? I thought you'd finished making that table long ago.

Jim: Only another five minutes, dear. I'm just polishing it. I came to see if tea3 was ready yet.

Maggie: Tea? We've only just had lunch.

Jim: Couldn't we have a little snack,4 then?

Maggie: Oh, I've had enough of sitting indoors all day and getting meals ready.5 Can't we go out to the pictures for a change? There's a good film on at the Odeon,6 with Elizabeth Taylor. Shall we go and see that?

Jim: All right. Elizabeth Taylor? Hmm, not a bad idea. Does it say in the local paper7 what time it starts?

Maggie: Six o'clock. That's really a bit late, now I come to think of it.8 Anyway,9 don't you think we've seen enough of Elizabeth Taylor lately? One film after another. What about driving to the West End10 and going to that new Italian film at the Plaza?11 That starts at five. We can just make it.12

Jim: (with enthusiasm) The one with Sophia Loren, you mean? Fine! Let's go right away.

Maggie: Oh, but by the time we've got ready13 it'll be too late again. Besides, there's bound to be14 a long queue. You should have thought of it earlier.15

Jim: Who's the one who wanted to go in the first place?16

Maggie: I know. You'd be quite happy to stay at home all day, as long as you got your meals on time.17

Jim: Well, why not stay at home, and watch television?

Maggie: You know there's never anything good on TV on a Sunday afternoon. Unless you're interested in pig-breeding18 or quizzes.

Jim: We haven't been to the Crown19 for ages. Let's pop

down20 for a beer later, and maybe a game or two of darts21 with the boys.22

Maggie: Oh, that smoky, noisy pub. I'd rather spend a quiet evening at home.

(enter23 Jane)

Jim: Oh, hallo, Jane.

 You should have thought

Jane: Hallo, Jim, hallo, Maggie. I'm glad I found you in.24 I thought we might all go to the pictures tonight. Would you like to go and see that film at the Odeon, with Liz25 Taylor?

Jim: Splendid. The two of us26 can go together. Maggie's just decided she doesn't like Elizabeth Taylor, and that she'd rather spend a quiet evening at home, anyway. So she can get some supper ready while we're out.

Maggie: What do you mean? Haven't I been saying all along27 we should go to the Odeon? You see, Jane, that's men all over!28
